Voices of Women Through Canadian History
Location: The Bay Centre Second Floor (next to Ann-Louise Jewelers)

The Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria is pleased to host Voices of Women through Canadian History, an exhibition celebrating International Women's Day and local women artists. This is a lightly juried show featuring female artists of all levels and disciplines.

More than just an exhibition, this event is a celebration of the diversity of female artists that call the British Columbian West Coast home. The works exhibited aim to exemplify the Canadian female experience. The exhibition is all inclusive, displaying a variety of mediums (print, painting, sculpture – to name a few). This installation will also feature performances and a speakers’ series of prominent women artists and art historians (times TBC).

Open to women artists, or artists that identify as women, that call Vancouver Island or the Gulf Islands home, this promises to be an exciting event imbued with cultural significance. The show runs from March 2nd until March 12th 2017 at the Victoria Arts Council's main gallery located at 636 Fort Street with the entrance located on the second floor of the Bay Centre next to Ann-Louise Jewellers.

A reception will take place on Thursday, March 2 from 7:00-8:30pm and will showcase local musical talent. Refreshments will be served. The reception is free and open to the public.

The Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria has encouraged and celebrated local arts since 1968. CACGV is a registered charity.

Rock Bay and surrounding neighbourhoods are on the outskirts of Victoria and are home to an eclectic and diverse population—from chic waterfront condos to light industry, low-budget motels, family shelter accommodations and artist studios. It is an area in transition and a place of shifting interests and transient populations. And though there are any number of people who live and work in this area, one seldom encounters the denizens and co-workers. Instead one is confronted by their passing, through discarded objects, graffiti, messages and the ever increasing number of fences and barbed wire that presumably keep some safe and others out.

These images were produced over a period of about 18 months while wandering the streets during my lunch break from a local printing firm, wondering about the stories behind the visual clues and backdrops of this area. Many of these sights and scenes would last less than a day, others for a few days, to be replaced by new scribblings, new businesses, buildings and fences.

This collection is an attempt to document these fleeting and transitory narratives of this disparate landscape; many of these ‘found’ objects and buildings now exist only within these images.

Gregory Varano is an international award-winning Artist- Photojournalist who recently relocated from Toronto Ontario to the District of Sooke, BC, Canada. Varano has worked for many English and Italian publications in Canada, United States and Europe. His audience recognizes him for his, perfection to detail, sensitivity to his subjects and photojournalistic approach. He not only creates through the camera, Varano hand processes all his film and prints all his prints both silver gelatin and Giclee. Varano has exhibited in many Art galleries in Canada, United States and Italy, Including in the New York Center For Photographic Art. Looking for her Man

Art Exhibit at the Greater Victoria Public  Library: Central Branch, 735 Broughton Ave. Victoria BC.

 Paintings by Merina Rael

Working from the heart, Merina Rael explores her love of the female form with her contemporary, and sometimes abstract, down-to-earth, funky, female figurative creations. She uses bold, strong, contrasting acrylic colours and cartoon-like characters. Her work evolves from graphics that transform into paintings to deliver her message of female empowerment.

Merina Rael has lived in Victoria for 45 years and is from Texas, USA. She has shown her work in 27 art galleries in Victoria over the last 25 years and won several awards for her work.

You can find her online on Facebook at Rael Studios or at:  raelstudios.com

Ashley Opperman (b. 1991) uses traditional painting materials to create 3-D wall hangings that straddle the different mediums of painting, sculpture, and textile. After graduating from the Visual Arts Program at Camosun College in 2014 she has continued to develop and shape her art practice by sharpening her traditional painting skills and further expanding the overall concepts supporting her work. She uses materials like canvas, ink and acrylic paint to reference the traditional fine art practice of painting while reforming varying elements to emulate textile craft: a not as traditional medium, generally categorized as a craft (not fine art) and primarily practiced by women. She aims to interrupt the viewer’s expectations and challenge the specific values we place on different mediums.

Marble has become a repeating motif in her work as it references classical marble sculptures, a very traditional fine art material, while also reflecting her environment here on the West coast - made up of patterned beach stones, and marbled quartz mountain sides. Her work balances between tension and peace; the colours, lines, and shapes feel peaceful while the works’ rebellious concept and unnatural contrasts, like draped marble, have you studying the works intense subtleties.
