John A. Satterberg:

I am a painter and photographer. Over the years my preferred mode of artistic expression has evolved into abstract expressionism. In photography this led to working in the abstract detail of the environment - away from immediately answering the somewhat inappropriate phrase in the viewer of “but, what is it?” I see art as the process of touching the viewer at a deeper level, where our habitual ways of seeing are challenged and we can learn to “see” and appreciate at a more basic, elemental manner.

By profession I am a retired clinical psychologist. To the interested viewer I will refer to my photography website at johnsatterberg.com where there are a numerous examples of my environmental abstract work. In recent months, after my move from Toronto and Twillingate, Newfoundland to my home in Victoria, British Columbia I have begun painting in earnest.

Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest of the United States (Portland, Oregon) I moved to Canada in 1968 where I taught at the University of Toronto. My education includes a B.A. from the University of Oregon, a M.A. in Psychology from the University of California (Riverside), and a Ph.D. in Psychology from UCLA in Los Angeles, California. After a number of years in practice as a clinical psychologist I worked as a psychologist in the prison system in Ontario where I assisted individual and groups of inmates to explore their artistic side of their personality through abstract painting.

My approach to abstract painting is to avoid conscious, intentional forms or gestures in artistic expression where known forms and objects reside and to rely on a deeper part of personality ... a more unconscious, less intentional process. I hope you will come to my gallery show and we can discuss this in more detail.

I specifically studied painting at the Haliburton School of the Arts in Ontario ... and through study with Lila Lewis Irving, an internationally known abstract painter in Toronto, through workshop courses in artistic abstract composition and expression.
